Supply Chain Efficiency Gains in SSA through Key Investments in Pipeline and Rail Infrastructure
This article investigates infrastructure developments taking place in key Trans-African corridors, from the railway link to the newly operational Simandou iron ore mine in Guinea, through Durban Port development plans, to expanding capacities and building new pipelines from Mozambique and Tanzania inland.
Much of SSA’s liquid fuels delivery still occurs via bulk trucks driving on road networks. Whilst there are plans to upgrade and improve road networks such as the 9 Trans-African Highways, moving products via pipelines or on rail become key enablers to reliability, efficiency and hence lower energy costs. The map below shows the existing pipeline infrastructure in SSA.
