After years of sustained contraction, the refining sector in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is facing a revival, with a series of new projects nearing completion that look set to sharply increase both crude processing capacity and operation rates of existing refineries, as long-dormant facilities are poised to resume operations.
This article looks at recent developments and presents CITAC’s outlook for the immediate and medium-term developments in the SSA refining sector, and the effect that has on net import balances in the region.
