Can Natural Gas Solve Sub-Saharan Africa’s power issues?

In this edition of CITAC’s Industry Insight, we explore the role natural gas could play in powering Africa’s development. Although it contributes only 5% to the continent’s energy mix, nearly half of Africa’s countries have proven gas reserves. Could gas offer the consistent, dispatchable power needed to electrify and industrialise?

Natural gas is cleaner than coal or oil and is widely used for power generation, particularly in North Africa. However, Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has only 21% of Africa’s gas turbine capacity, and more than half of that runs on liquid fuels due to limited gas access.
